Public safety is a core service of any city. To be effective, police, fire, and emergency operations must be transparent and accountable to the communities they are charged with protecting. With national efforts to redefine safety for all communities, Salt Lake City has an opportunity to serve as an example to the rest of the state and the nation. Chris has been a leader in these once-in-a-generation endeavors.
As Council Chair in 2020, Chris helped create the Racial Equity in Policing Commission and led efforts to strengthen the oversight powers of the Police-Civilian Review Board.
Chris championed efforts to secure and expand social worker responses to certain crisis calls.
Just before the 2018 & 2019 fires on Capitol Hill, Chris helped secure critical firefighting equipment that saved dozens of homes from being lost.
Chris voted for one of the single largest compensation increases for police officers, fire fighters, and 911 dispatchers.
After dialoguing with police and policy experts, Chris helped replace antiquated hiring, promotion, and disciplinary policies within the Salt Lake City Police and Fire Departments.
Chris led efforts to ban the use of military-grade weapons and equipment by Salt Lake City Police Department.
